We’ve all heard of the Japenese ”Law Suit” era guitars from the 1970s. Well did you know that this is THE guitar that all the fuss was over! The Ibanez 2549 Destroyer - commonly referred to as the Korina Explorer - was the model that was just a bit too good. It forced Gibson in America into legal action, and the rest is history.
When we add to that the fact that Eddie Van Halen himself used one on the first VH album in 1978 and Ace Frehley of Kiss was often seen on stage and in the studio with his. They are now a thing of legend, the king of of the “Law Suit” era guitars. Not to mention vary rare on the secondhand market!
Manufactured at the FujiGen-Gakki factory in 1976. It still has its original Super 70s humbucking pickup in the neck and what we believe to be an 80’s Dimarzio USA Super Distortion Humbucker in the bridge. The body is made from Ash (Japanese Sen) with a Korina gloss finish. Turns out “Korina” is the colour name and not what the body is made of)
The 24.75” scale length Maple neck features a Rosewood fingerboard with 22 frets and pearl dot inlays.
Original tuning keys are gone, long ago replaced with German Schaller tuners (a solid upgrade)
This guitar is a players grade instrument. Signs of use, marks, scratches and dings are apparent and we’ve done our best to show them clearly in the photos of this listing. More detailed photos are available upon request.
There has long ago been a structural repair to the body at the neck join. What appears to be have been a crack has been glued and can be seen clearly in the photos. It is our assessment that this is an old repair and the guitar is rock solid.
This guitar has its original 1976 factory Ibanez case included in the sale. The case presents well internally but please not the it is structurally not very sound any more. Particularly the bottom of the case where the laminated plywood bottom had come awat from the sides in some areas. See Photos
As always we would love to see you in store at our Mornington showroom to experience this guitar for yourself. If that’s not possible, we will happily send you as many photos/videos as we can to help you on your search for your next guitar.
